Where the containers stop being containers
Most of what leaves the San Pedro Bay ports by truck does not go far on the first move. It goes to Carson, Rancho Dominguez, or Compton, gets transloaded out of a marine container into domestic trailers, and moves on from there. Carson sits at the middle of that, with the 405, the 110, the 710, and the Alameda Street truck route all within a few miles of each other.
That gives Carson a very different truck population than the harbor. Down at the port it is tractors and pool chassis. Up here it is dry vans, transload trailers, yard goats, box trucks, and a lot of equipment that spends most of its life on private property. We work all of it.
Where we work in Carson
- Alameda Street. Built to expressway standards through here, grade-separated from the Alameda Corridor rail trench at Sepulveda Boulevard, 223rd Street, Carson Street, and Del Amo Boulevard. This is the main surface truck route from the harbor north.
- Sepulveda Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard. The east–west warehouse streets, running between the 110 and the 710 past dock after dock.
- The I-405 / I-110 interchange. Heavy merging, heavy grades, and the most common freeway breakdown spot in the city.
- The I-405 / I-710 interchange. Where South Bay traffic meets the main port drayage artery.
- Wilmington Avenue, Avalon Boulevard, and Main Street. North–south connectors through the warehouse district.
- The Dominguez Channel industrial area. Yards and lots on both sides, some of them tight for a service truck.
Dock work and yard work
A Carson call usually falls into one of three shapes:
- At the dock. The truck is loaded, the appointment window is closing, and something failed — air, lights, brakes, a no-start. These are the most time-critical calls we get, because the trailer is not going anywhere until the tractor does.
- In the yard. Scheduled work or a problem found before dispatch. This is where preventive maintenance actually belongs — doing PM where the trucks already park beats sending them to a shop and losing the day.
- On the freeway. The 405 and 110 through Carson have hard shoulders in most places, which is a genuine advantage over the harbor. Still call 911 if you are in a lane.
